In a significant step towards showcasing Fijian culture on an international stage, the Suva City Council recently represented Fiji at the “Digital Culture Construction for Belt and Road Countries” seminar in China. This two-week event concentrated on the intersection of technology, culture, and the arts, with representatives from various Belt and Road nations participating.

During the seminar, delegates visited the Luxseven Museum of Jewelry Culture & Arts in Shandong province, notable for its exhibitions on masi, a cultural fabric significant to Fiji’s identity. This marks the first time Fijian masi has been exhibited in China, emphasizing Fiji’s commitment to cultural diversity.

Albert Wong, an IT specialist from the Suva City Council, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to see Fijian culture represented abroad. “Seeing it here gave me a sense of comfort, especially having our culture, our prints and our story being showcased for the first time ever in China,” he remarked. The exhibition, launched in May as part of International Museum Day 2025, exemplifies a collaborative effort between the Fijian government, the Fiji Museum, and the Qingdao Luxseven Fine Jewellery Museum, reinforcing the importance of cultural exchange between Fiji and China.

This seminar falls under China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at fostering international cooperation and collaboration among developing countries. Wong’s participation, facilitated by the Chinese Cultural Centre and the Chinese Embassy in Suva, reflects Fiji’s aspirations for a digitally transformed future, with the potential for enhanced connectivity and cultural diplomacy.

The positive takeaway from this event is the strengthening of cultural ties through collaborative projects, potentially leading to increased cultural exchange opportunities for Fiji. This not only promotes Fijian identity but also opens doors for future partnerships that enrich both nations. As Fiji navigates its journey towards digital transformation, events like these can forge a path towards a more interconnected global presence.
