Discussions are in full swing regarding the integration of culture into Fiji’s national development framework. Led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, the Consultation Reflection on the National Strategic Development Plan for the Culture Sector is being held at Yadua Bay Resort. This event is part of the government’s broader strategy to embed cultural elements into various aspects of national policy.

In his speech, Prasad emphasized culture’s essential role in national development, particularly in guiding policies related to education, health, economic growth, and international cooperation. He stated, “This consultation is crucial as we implement the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050. Culture must be integrated into policies across education, health, economic development, and international cooperation for sustainable growth.”

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted Fiji’s multicultural identity, noting that the traditions and customs of its diverse ethnic communities play a vital role in fostering national unity and progress. This consultation aims to ensure that cultural preservation aligns with Fiji’s long-term development strategies while promoting inclusivity and sustainability.

This initiative correlates with efforts by the Department of Culture, Heritage, and Arts, which is developing a Cultural Statistics Framework that aims to enhance evidence-based policies in the cultural sector. Notably, ongoing consultations are scheduled to engage various stakeholders, illuminating the economic contributions of the culture sector. Such actions reflect a collective governmental commitment to recognizing and preserving Fiji’s cultural heritage, thus enhancing its identity and economic potential.

The commitment to incorporating cultural considerations into the national development agenda is a hopeful step towards creating a more unified and prosperous Fiji, where diversity is seen as strength and culture as a pillar of national identity. With leaders actively fostering dialogue on these important matters, there is optimism for building a cohesive society that values and celebrates its rich cultural tapestry. This commitment to inclusivity and community engagement suggests a bright future for Fiji’s cultural preservation and economic sustainability.
