Father Frank Hoare’s spiritual journey commenced more than five decades ago when he answered the divine call that took him from his hometown in Portlaoise, Ireland, to the islands of Fiji. Recently, the Columban missionary priest has published two books, “A Missionary Diary” and “A World of Difference,” which encapsulate his experiences and the immense faith he has encountered during his service in Fiji.
In these volumes, Father Hoare reflects on the generosity and warmth intrinsic to the iTaukei and Indo-Fijian communities. His works aim to foster a deeper cultural understanding between these groups and highlight the rich cultural tapestry of Fiji. According to Fr. Hoare, these books serve a dual purpose—not only as personal memoirs but also as aids to help Fijians appreciate each other’s diverse backgrounds.
His journey into priesthood stemmed from humble beginnings. Raised in a nurturing family environment, he cherished education and community, engaging in music and sports during his formative years. His pursuit of faith began early, evolving from a strong connection with Jesus Christ to a calling for missionary work—a decision spurred by a visiting Columban priest’s report on the needs of parishes in Latin America.
Father Hoare’s theological training included an intensive curriculum, amidst a transformative period for the Catholic Church due to the reforms stemming from the Second Vatican Council. Despite the challenges faced by the church, his commitment to service remained unwavering, culminating in his appointment to Fiji, where he truly found joy and purpose.
During the launch of his books, attended by significant figures like the Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran and Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, Father Hoare expressed optimism about the cultural unity both the iTaukei and Indo-Fijian people can achieve. The books have sparked discussions on the importance of understanding and valuing diverse cultures within Fiji, sharing a common theme with other initiatives aimed at preserving Fiji’s rich heritage.
As culture and community continue to intertwine in Fiji, Father Hoare’s narratives stand as a beacon of hope, illustrating the potential for mutual appreciation and understanding in a world increasingly focused on differences rather than similarities.
