Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad has lauded the Indian High Commission for its ongoing efforts to promote the Hindi language and its cultural significance in Fiji. This commendation came during his attendance at the Hindi Kavi Sammelan 2025, an event honoring World Hindi Day, where he celebrated the contributions of prominent Hindi poets from Suva.

In his address, Prof. Prasad emphasized the deep-rooted historical ties between Fiji and India, asserting that the Hindi language serves as a vital link between the two nations. “The relationship between Fiji and India is a historic bond,” he remarked, indicating that this bond has been further solidified by the official introduction of Hindi in the Fijian Parliament.

The event also featured the launch of three new Hindi literary works authored by Uttra Gurdyal, marking a significant stride in the promotion of Hindi literature in Fiji.

The recognition of Hindi in Parliament is not just a reflection of linguistic presence but an affirmation of cultural identity for the Indo-Fijian community, echoing sentiments expressed in earlier celebrations of Indo-Fijian heritage, such as the Ramayan Mela. Prof. Prasad underscored the importance of cultural ties, following a narrative that links the struggles of the Indian indentured laborers with the rich cultural narratives of India.

This ongoing dedication to cultural preservation is pivotal for the Indo-Fijian community, fostering unity and enhancing understanding within the diverse social fabric of Fiji. The celebratory events surrounding Hindi reflect a broader commitment to multiculturalism and celebrate the vibrant legacy of Hindi-speaking communities in the region.

In summary, the celebration of World Hindi Day and the literary contributions marked a hopeful and culturally enriching moment for Fiji, uniting communities through shared heritage and language while paving the way for continued appreciation of cultural diversity. This initiative not only underscores the value of the Hindi language in Fiji but also points towards a promising future where such cultural engagements flourish.
