In Fiji, there has been a recorded total of 4,703 crime reports submitted to the police this month, according to the Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua. This figure was shared during a parliamentary session and underscores the proactive approach being taken by law enforcement to address crime, especially drug-related incidents.
Minister Naivalurua noted that the increase in crime reports is largely attributed to intensified police efforts focusing on drug-related issues. This current month’s total marks a decrease from 5,202 reports in March 2024, indicating variability in crime trends. For example, incidents of aggravated burglary have fallen from 225 cases in December 2024 to 159 in February 2025. Additionally, aggravated robbery cases have decreased from 51 to 36, reflecting positive developments from targeted police initiatives.
Notably, Naivalurua pointed out that there have been no reports of street violence over the last three months. He clarified that while such incidents might not explicitly fall under the Crimes Act of 2009, assault remains the key reportable crime. An analysis of offenders indicates that many are employed, with farmers representing 13.5% of those involved in criminal activities.
The Minister conveyed a strong sense of confidence in the current policing operations, reinforcing the commitment to fighting crime through varied strategic actions. He remarked, “The rate at which these crimes are committed is quite unprecedented, which is why we continue to work steadfastly toward their eradication.”
This update not only sheds light on the evolving challenges of crime in Fiji but also illustrates the dedication of the police force to enhance community safety through targeted actions. The ongoing efforts to modernize the police force, actively engage with communities, and address multiple crime categories signal a hopeful path toward improved public safety.
Moving ahead, the Fiji Police Force aims to bolster its operations further, fostering collaboration with the community to effectively combat crime, thereby enhancing safety for all residents. The commitment to continuous improvement is encouraging and suggests a proactive stance toward maintaining peace and security in Fiji.
