The Fiji Police Force has reported a concerning 18 percent increase in crime for February 2025 when compared to the same month in the previous year. The surge in criminal activity is primarily driven by theft, which skyrocketed from 276 cases to 414. Significant thefts, including three notable incidents, resulted in losses exceeding $189,000 from business entities.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu highlighted a growing trend in cyber-related crimes, specifically noting 52 instances of obtaining financial advantage by deception. This uptick in reported cyber fraud indicates an increasing awareness and confidence among the public to report such crimes, with many cases committed in prior years but only officially recorded in February 2025.
Furthermore, the report indicates other serious offenses contributing to the overall crime rise, including 261 cases of assault causing actual bodily harm, 203 cases of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, 159 cases of burglary and aggravated robbery, and 112 instances of criminal intimidation. These figures emphasize the challenges that law enforcement faces in maintaining public safety, yet they also present opportunities for improved police-community engagement.
In earlier reports, similar trends were noted where the Fiji Police Force addressed various crime types, showing their intention to enhance investigative capabilities and community trust. For instance, previous months indicated a rise in serious crimes, but some statistics also revealed decreases in crimes against women and children, suggesting that ongoing community initiatives and police responses are beginning to have a positive effect.
The consistent focus on crime prevention strategies and maintaining open lines of communication between law enforcement and residents can foster a more secure environment. Moving forward, the collaboration between the community and police could play an essential role in reversing these crime trends and enhancing overall safety in Fiji.
