Fiji’s Crime Surge: What You Need to Know

The Fiji Police Force has reported an alarming 18% rise in crime for February 2025 compared to the previous year. Theft was notably the most common offense, escalating from 276 cases to 414. Among these, three significant incidents were responsible for 77 individual counts, leading to business losses of approximately $1.89 million.

Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu explained that some reports included multiple counts, which may partially explain the dramatic increase in statistics. There has also been a concerning rise in cyber-related crimes, with 52 cases of obtaining financial advantage by deception, which reflects an increasing public confidence in reporting these incidents to law enforcement.

Other serious offenses have surged as well, including a 24% overall increase in serious crimes. Drug-related offenses rose by 16%, with the police recording 220 drug-related cases—203 of which involved unlawful possession. Marijuana was the most prevalent substance involved, with 188 cases noted.

In contrast, there is a positive development with an 11% reduction in crimes against women and children, although serious offenses related to sexual crimes, burglary, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft have seen increases. Of the 91 reported sexual offenses, a staggering 58% involved victims under the age of 18, including a troubling case concerning a three-year-old girl.

The report also indicates the involvement of young offenders, with two 17-year-olds charged with defilement against minors. Alarmingly, four police officers were charged for serious violations, including assault.

Despite these troubling statistics, Fiji Police emphasize the importance of community cooperation in addressing these rising crime rates. The police are committed to fostering trust and enhancing public safety through ongoing community engagement and transparency.

Overall, the rise in crime rates presents both significant challenges and an opportunity to strengthen the collaboration between law enforcement and the community, thereby enhancing safety measures and potentially reducing future incidents.

This situation highlights the complexities of crime in Fiji, but with proactive measures and concerted engagement from both police and citizens, there is hope for a safer environment in the future.
