In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci indicated that the most prevalent crime was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of minors under 18 years, among others.
Raikaci also reported that six police officers faced charges for serious misconduct, including abuse of office, assault causing bodily harm, and possession of illegal drugs. He noted that police officers themselves were victims, with 171 officers reporting a total of 219 crimes against them, which included serious assaults and obstruction of duty.
Additionally, September saw a total of 838 individuals charged with various offences, including 48 juveniles. The age distribution of offenders included 486 individuals aged 18 to 35, 266 aged 36 to 55, and 38 aged 56 and above.
Commissioner Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force to combat crime, expressing concern over the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, which he believes could adversely affect their education and future. He emphasized the need for family and community support in mentoring young people. As the festive season approaches, Raikaci announced plans to enhance police operations and called for respect for the law to ensure safer communities.
