Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has firmly denied allegations of manipulated crime statistics amid ongoing public skepticism regarding the accuracy of recent crime data. During a press conference where June 2025 statistics were released, Tudravu addressed concerns from both the public and media questioning the authenticity of official reports.

The Commissioner reassured citizens that the reported figures are solely based on validated police reports and expressed confidence that there is no incentive to alter crime statistics. “While unreported crimes may exist, we have nothing to gain from manipulating our statistics. We encourage anyone who has doubts to reach out to us for clarification,” Tudravu stated, emphasizing the importance of transparency and public trust.

Additionally, despite public doubt, Commissioner Tudravu highlighted that for the third month in a row, Fiji has experienced a notable reduction in overall crime rates. Statistics reveal an 8% drop in overall crime and a 17% decrease in serious crimes compared to the same month in 2024.

These statistics align with previous reports indicating a decline in serious offenses, such as burglary and robbery, although concerns about specific crime categories, including theft and drug-related incidents, have been raised. This reflects an ongoing complexity in the crime landscape and highlights the need for collaboration between law enforcement and the community.

The Commissioner called for public support and patience, stating, “We understand that some may remain skeptical, but our commitment to serving the community and fostering trust remains steadfast.” In light of these developments, there exists a hopeful perspective for a collective effort in crime reduction, where continued engagement and transparency can strengthen the relationship between the police and the public, ultimately leading to a safer environment for all.

Community involvement in reporting and addressing crime remains essential, and there is optimism that through ongoing dialogue and support, Fiji can navigate challenges effectively and enhance public safety.
