The Fiji Police Force has recorded a total of 4,703 crime reports in just 15 days this March, a decrease from 5,202 reports during the same period last year. This significant number reflects continued challenges in maintaining public safety, as highlighted by Minister for Policing, Iowane Naivalurua, who described the situation as unprecedented for Fiji.
Minister Naivalurua emphasized that the increase in reported crimes is largely due to intensified police efforts targeting drug-related offenses. He noted ongoing initiatives to improve operational effectiveness, suggesting that these strategies may be having a positive effect on specific crime categories, such as aggravated burglary and robbery, which have seen decreases in recent months.
The Minister outlined that the Fiji Police are leveraging modern technology, including CCTV and surveillance systems, to improve evidence collection and disrupt criminal activities more effectively. A dedicated task force has also been deployed to specific regions like Kadavu and Vanua Levu to address drug issues, focusing on known “red zones” of criminal activity.
Although challenges remain, Naivalurua emphasized an enhanced commitment to community policing as a critical aspect of the strategy moving forward. He acknowledged the necessity of rebuilding trust between the police and communities, stating that this partnership is vital for effective crime prevention.
