This year began with a concerning 26 percent rise in overall crime rates for January, as noted by Ioane Naivalurua, the Minister for Policing, during a recent session in Parliament. This marked an increase from the previous year’s 27 percent escalation in crime, prompting significant dialogue about public safety.
Naivalurua highlighted that the nature of criminal activities is evolving and becoming more sophisticated, necessitating a forward-thinking approach to law enforcement. To address these challenges, police operations will be intensified over the next three months, with strategies aimed at increasing on-the-ground visibility and developing effective operational protocols.
“My mandate since taking office has aimed at modernizing and enhancing the discipline of the Fiji Police Force to align with the changing landscape of security,” Naivalurua stated. Key initiatives, such as the Police Uplift Initiative, aim to modernize the force and enhance its capabilities in addressing rapidly evolving public safety concerns.
He emphasized the need to review the outdated Police Act from 1965, which currently hinders the force’s use of new technologies and capabilities. Such a review is perceived as essential for improving law enforcement services and rebuilding public trust.
Additionally, Naivalurua announced that the Cabinet approved the Counter Narcotics Bill, which is designed to bolster the Bureau’s functions in tackling drug-related offenses. The first draft of this legislative measure has been completed, and future consultations will be scheduled to gather input on its implementation.
This commitment to enhancing the Fiji Police Force underscores a proactive approach to crime prevention, particularly in light of rising criminal incidents. As illustrated by previous reports, crime against vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, has been increasing, indicating an urgent need for community engagement to counter these trends.
