The rising cost of living in Fiji is becoming a significant concern for residents, as emphasized by Opposition Member of Parliament Sanjay Kirpal during a recent parliamentary session. He criticized the government’s approach in the 2025-2026 National Budget, arguing that a mere 2.5% reduction in VAT fails to provide the necessary relief that many Fijians urgently need.

Mr. Kirpal stated that the country requires genuine measures rather than superficial tactics that seem aimed at influence ahead of elections. He noted that citizens deserve more than political theatrics and that the government should prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable populations instead of balancing its budget at their expense. His call includes eliminating VAT on essential goods like food and medicine to alleviate the pressure on low-income families.

Echoing these concerns, previous discussions by fellow opposition members like Virendra Lal and Hem Chand have highlighted similar frustrations over the government’s fiscal policies. Lal had previously pointed out that the increased VAT to 15% has burdened ordinary Fijians who are struggling just to provide basic necessities for their families. Chand emphasized the discontent among various groups, including workers and farmers, who feel neglected by the government’s financial strategies.

Together, these voices indicate a growing consensus that substantial reforms are necessary to address the economic challenges facing everyday Fijians. On a more hopeful note, there is recognition among government officials, such as Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad, of the need to support vulnerable communities and develop strategies aimed at creating a balanced economic environment.

As the nation grapples with these pressing financial issues, continued dialogue and collaborative efforts in Parliament could potentially pave the way for more effective policies focused on easing the burden on families throughout Fiji.
