Fiji’s Corruption Inquiry May Extend as Witness Examinations Continue

The Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the controversial appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali is considering extending its sessions until late next month. The hearings commenced earlier this week and are initially set to gather testimonies from 35 witnesses over a two-week period.

Justice David Ashton-Lewis, the sole commissioner of the inquiry, has suggested that an extension until the end of February may be necessary due to the extensive material still to cover. He highlighted the importance of thorough questioning, stating, “We probably going to have to request the President to extend the date to the end of February,” indicating that an additional four weeks could help in addressing the backlog of witness examinations.

So far, the COI has only heard from two witnesses—Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa—from a planned five on the first day of hearings. Justice Ashton-Lewis emphasized that the quality of responses is crucial, insisting that straightforward “yes” or “no” answers are inadequate. He underscored the necessity for comprehensive explanations to establish the truth during the investigation.

As of now, 28 witnesses have yet to provide their testimonies, which further stresses the need for an extension. The extensive nature of the inquiry reflects a commitment to transparency and thoroughness, aiming to rebuild public trust in governance.

This inquiry not only underscores the commitment to accountability in Fiji’s institutions but also represents a significant step towards understanding the complexities surrounding the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner. The extension of the COI’s sessions, if approved, would provide the time needed to ensure a comprehensive investigation, potentially leading to positive changes and reforms in the future governance landscape of Fiji.
