Fiji’s Corruption Inquiry Delayed: What’s at Stake?

The Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced that its report will now be delivered on April 29, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled date. Counsel assisting the inquiry, Janet Mason, confirmed the postponement, attributing the need for additional time to the comprehensive nature of the report and the Easter holiday.

The COI is focused on assessing the integrity, fairness, and transparency of the appointment process of Malimali, who took on the role last September. The inquiry includes probing any potential improper influences related to the appointment, especially concerning ongoing FICAC investigations involving various high-profile individuals such as politicians and senior public servants.

This investigation is particularly crucial as the appointment’s legitimacy has been under scrutiny, with particular attention paid to the need to protect the integrity of public service processes in Fiji. The inquiry is expected to reveal significant insights into governance and accountability in order to bolster public trust.

As with earlier articles, this inquiry represents an opportunity for Fiji to enhance its governance framework. There is a collective hope that the findings will prompt necessary reforms and reinforce ethical standards in public service appointments. The ongoing commitment to transparency suggests a promising path forward for improved trust and integrity within Fiji’s governance systems.
