Former board member of Telecom Fiji Ltd and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings, Sanjay Kaba, has had a stop-departure order lifted, allowing him temporary permission to travel abroad for work purposes. The Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza approved this request following an application from Kaba’s defense lawyer, Wasu Pillay.
Kaba is facing serious allegations involving one count of obtaining a financial advantage of $766,327.22. These accusations stem from his involvement in bidding for a tender through his company, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Ltd (HLK Jacob), related to the project management services for Telecom Fiji’s new office and data center project between June 2022 and July 2023. It is alleged that Kaba failed to declare his involvement as a director of HLK Jacob during this process, raising substantial concerns about conflicts of interest.
Pillay stated that Kaba has complied with all his bail conditions, and there were no objections to the travel request from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) prosecutor, Nimisha Shankar. A new court hearing date has been set for May 6, which will further address these significant charges.
This case sheds light on the broader commitment of FICAC to tackle corruption and enforce ethical standards in corporate governance. It emphasizes the vital importance of transparency and accountability within leadership roles in both private and public sectors in Fiji. As the case unfolds, it is hoped that accountability measures will be strengthened and public trust in governance will be reinforced. The upcoming court proceedings will be a critical juncture for Kaba, and potentially significant for the fight against corruption in Fiji.
