The Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, has issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in corrupt activities, particularly as the holiday season approaches. She emphasized the importance of ethical behavior, especially for public office-holders and civil servants, cautioning against the acceptance of gifts during this time.
Ms. Malimali pointed out, “For all civil servants or anyone receiving money from the government, remember that the Christmas period is not an excuse to solicit donations from the public or businesses.” She specifically advised against asking for gifts such as food or other items, describing such actions as corruption. She further urged the public not to offer these gifts to government officials.
Highlighting the need for transparency, Ms. Malimali insisted that any donations to government ministries or departments should be registered and declared properly. “If you want to give something to a government department or ministry, please register it somewhere, declare it,” she stated, reinforcing that transparency is crucial for maintaining integrity.
The FICAC Commissioner also encouraged civil servants and the public to report any suspicious activities they observe. She assured them that all complaints are taken seriously by FICAC, which conducts preliminary investigations when necessary, including gathering formal statements from involved individuals.
Ultimately, Ms. Malimali reiterated FICAC’s commitment to fighting corruption, underscoring the significance of integrity and accountability for Fiji’s advancement.
This message not only serves as a warning but also as a call to action for all citizens to uphold ethical standards during the festive season. By fostering a culture of transparency and vigilance, Fijians can work towards a corruption-free society, paving the way for a brighter future.
