The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has forwarded a case involving its Commissioner Barbara Malimali to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for further evaluation. This case pertains to allegations of Abuse of Office against Ms. Malimali during her tenure as Chair of the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF).
Additionally, FICAC has confirmed the closure of five cases that were previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier this year. The Supervisor of Elections was informed of the case closures on July 24, 2024.
The closed cases include allegations of corrupt practices involving the FijiFirst Party, specifically against the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama. Other issues addressed include allegations of collusion and conflict of interest involving Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, Mr. Mohammed Saneem, and Mr. Arif Ali, the latter who is accused of making a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.
There were also complaints lodged against His Excellency, the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Mr. Charan Jeath Singh, as well as a complaint against Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama for allegedly submitting false declarations of income, assets, and liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022. Furthermore, there is a complaint against Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum for not declaring an overseas travel allowance.
As for the other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections, FICAC has indicated that those investigations are still ongoing and will refrain from commenting until they are concluded. FICAC emphasizes that it is conducting its operations as usual, ensuring that all complaints are addressed with the necessary diligence, regardless of the individuals involved.
