The Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, has been requested to take a temporary leave to facilitate a Commission of Inquiry without interference. This initiative comes from the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission and the Chief Justice, Salesi Temo, reflecting a strong commitment to transparency and integrity within the judicial process.

Tomasi Bainivalu, the Secretary of the JSC, confirmed that Malimali has voluntarily accepted this leave to ensure that the inquiry can proceed smoothly and conclude effectively. This decision aims to allow the Commission of Inquiry to operate without any undue influence as it investigates critical issues related to governance and accountability within Fiji’s legal system.

Lisiate Fotofll has been appointed as Acting Deputy Commissioner during Malimali’s absence, effective from February 19, 2025. This appointment is intended to maintain the operational efficiency of FICAC during this period.

The inquiry is particularly significant as it is centered around allegations of abuse of office against Malimali, which has garnered extensive public and political attention. Concerns have been raised about her prior appointment and its implications for FICAC’s credibility. Political leaders have emphasized that ensuring Malimali’s leave is a crucial step in preserving public confidence in the institution’s integrity.

The proceedings of this inquiry present an essential opportunity for FICAC to reinforce its commitment to good governance and accountability, potentially restoring trust in its operations and the wider judicial framework in Fiji. It symbolizes a proactive approach in addressing concerns about corruption and maintaining the integrity of public institutions.

Overall, this situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability within governance, paving the way for potential reforms that could strengthen Fiji’s commitment to rule of law and public trust.
