The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has embarked on a Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE) that has resulted in the creation of 81 new positions spanning administration, technical, and ranking officer roles. This initiative has received approval from the Cabinet and was supported by Parliament as part of the national budget for the current financial year.
During a recent session in Parliament, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga conveyed that the traditional notions of promotions and demotions will not be recognized under the new structure. Instead, he emphasized that an officer’s advancement or reassignment will depend on their specific position, performance, and the organization’s needs rather than traditional hierarchical movements.
“The organizational realignment includes updating Human Resources policies and identifying personnel as we incorporate these 81 new posts over the next three financial years,” Mr. Turaga explained. He noted that there has been a critical need to restructure the pay scale in line with experience, qualifications, and the responsibilities of each role, a modification not made in the past 40 years since the last JEE was conducted.
Mr. Turaga also highlighted that this evaluation has allowed the organization to clearly define job descriptions for various officer roles, supported by the establishment of a new organizational chart reflecting these changes, something previous administrations had not accomplished.
This proactive step forward for the Fiji Corrections Services seeks to enhance workforce efficiency and better align roles with the growing demands of the correctional system, providing a more structured environment for employees.
In summary, the FCS is reforming its organizational structure to better meet modern needs, enhancing clarity and performance criteria for its officers. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to professional development but also positions the agency to respond effectively to future challenges.
