The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has undertaken a significant Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), leading to the identification of 81 new roles in various sectors including administration, technical, and officer-ranking positions. This initiative has received approval from the Cabinet and has been backed by Parliament through this financial year’s national budget.

Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga addressed Parliament and emphasized that traditional concepts of promotions and demotions will no longer apply in the new structure. Instead, career progression will be determined by the post to which an officer is transferred, which will take into account both their performance and the operational needs of the organization.

Turaga stated, “The realignment of the organisation structure integrates the updating of Human Resources policies and identifies personnel for the newly established 81 positions over the next three financial years.” He acknowledged the ongoing need to adjust the pay structure to better reflect the experience, qualifications, and demands placed upon officers in their roles.

Historically, this is a pivotal moment for the organization, as the last JEE was conducted around 40 years ago. The current evaluation has allowed the FCS to create precise job descriptions across various officer roles, culminating in the development of an updated organizational chart that reflects these new positions—a step that was absent in previous administrations.
