Fiji’s Corrections Service Issues Stark Warning on Contraband Smuggling

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has issued a strong reminder to the public about the serious consequences of engaging in illegal activities, particularly the smuggling of contraband into correctional facilities. This warning follows a recent increase in arrests related to such attempts.

In separate incidents over the last two days, two individuals were captured trying to smuggle prohibited items, including marijuana, methamphetamine, and mobile phones, into correctional facilities. Detained by FCS officers on-site, these individuals were subsequently handed over to the police and could face significant legal repercussions for their actions.

The FCS emphasizes its unwavering zero-tolerance stance on contraband smuggling. Engaging in these activities poses severe legal risks that far exceed any short-term advantages one might perceive. Moreover, those approached to conceal or deliver contraband are strongly encouraged to refuse and report these interactions, thus protecting themselves and upholding the law.

In a poignant example highlighted by Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, Commissioner of Corrections, one recent offender was a woman with young children at home, whose husband is already incarcerated. He noted, “We do not want a situation where both parents are on the wrong side of the law,” underscoring the profound social and economic impacts such scenarios can have on innocent children.

The FCS is committed to fostering a secure and rehabilitative environment for inmates. It calls upon the public to contribute to this mission by adhering to lawful behavior, thereby promoting positive habits and a healthier community.

This message serves as a crucial reminder that community involvement and lawful conduct are key to ensuring safety and support for all, especially for families impacted by incarceration. By working together, we can help create environments conducive to rehabilitation and positive change, benefiting everyone in the long run.
