Justice Minister Siromi Turaga provided an update to the Cabinet regarding the viral video involving acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Sevuloni Naucukidi, which has stirred public interest and concern. The footage shows Naucukidi in a physical confrontation at a well-known venue in Suva, prompting internal investigations into the incident.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed ongoing investigations and mentioned that the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) may be involved if necessary. He stated that an internal review is in progress, and that all pertinent information, including Naucukidi’s account from the night of the altercation, will be disclosed exclusively to Minister Turaga.

In previous reports, it was noted that the incident might have occurred in early March 2025, prior to Naucukidi’s appointment as acting commissioner. Minister Turaga emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism among public officials, particularly when representing their organizations.

This situation follows the recent controversy surrounding the previous Commissioner, Jalesi Nakarawa, who was suspended amid misconduct allegations. The scrutiny on Naucukidi and his actions underscores the ongoing need for accountability and integrity within the Fiji Corrections Service.

Despite the challenges posed by this incident, it serves as a critical opportunity for the Fiji Corrections Service to reflect on its standards and commitment to ethical behavior. By focusing on reform and accountability, there is hope for restoring public trust in the corrections system, ultimately fostering a more reliable and respected institution within the community.
