The Fiji Corrections Service is taking proactive steps to explore development projects aimed at enhancing sustainability within its facilities. Recently, Commissioner of Corrections Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa visited the Indian High Commission, where he met with His Excellency P. S. K. Karthigeyan, the Indian High Commissioner, to discuss the potential implementation of solar energy systems across Fiji’s correctional facilities.
This initiative is a part of the Fiji Corrections Service’s ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint, enhance energy efficiency, and lower operational costs. If brought to fruition, the solarization project would mark a significant advancement in integrating renewable energy solutions in the corrections sector, thereby supporting Fiji’s broader objectives of sustainable development and energy independence.
Dr. Nakarawa expressed gratitude for the Indian Government’s ongoing support, highlighting shared values of innovation and sustainability that could fortify this partnership. In response, High Commissioner Karthigeyan reiterated India’s readiness to collaborate, emphasizing the nation’s proficiency in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure development.
This visit serves as a foundational step for future engagement and technical discussions. Both parties have committed to maintaining an open dialogue and exchanging technical insights to evaluate the feasibility and execution plans for the proposed solar initiative.
The Fiji Corrections Service remains dedicated to implementing modern, environmentally friendly practices while fulfilling its primary mission of ensuring safe and secure correctional facilities. This initiative not only promises to enhance operations but also reflects a growing commitment to sustainable practices that can lead to a greener future.
