Fiji’s Corrections Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa has reinforced a strict stance on adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), warning officers that any breach will lead to immediate dismissal. This message was delivered during the recent Commissioner’s Parade, attended by over a hundred officers. Nakarawa emphasized the need for professionalism and accountability as the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) aims to uphold integrity and maintain high standards within its ranks.

Addressing the officers, Nakarawa stated, “The time for discussion has passed, and immediate action is necessary. If you are found colluding with inmates or testing positive for drugs, be prepared to face consequences.” He reiterated the importance of understanding their roles within the legal framework and the golden rule, “familiarity breeds contempt,” urging officers to be vigilant against behaviors that could compromise the service.

In addition to addressing officer conduct, Nakarawa introduced a new Rehabilitation Framework designed to empower inmates by allowing them to choose rehabilitation programs suited to their unique needs. This initiative reflects a significant move toward better reintegration of offenders and aims to improve rehabilitation outcomes within Fiji’s correctional system.

The FCS is also making strides to enhance its operational capabilities through various proposals submitted to Parliament, including the establishment of a drug rehabilitation center. Furthermore, plans for regional collaboration with Tonga have been initiated via a Memorandum of Understanding. During the parade, Nakarawa also recognized the dedication of certain officers by awarding them medals for exemplary service.

Nakarawa concluded his address by emphasizing the collective power of the FCS to transform their service and positively influence the lives they serve. He encouraged all members to embody integrity and dedication in their roles as part of the ongoing commitment to enhancing the standards and effectiveness of the corrections system in Fiji.

This proactive approach reflects a positive momentum within the FCS, focusing not just on maintaining discipline but also on fostering a progressive environment that emphasizes rehabilitation and professional integrity among its officers.
