Two correctional officers from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) have been dismissed due to their involvement in a drug-related incident during a law enforcement operation. The incident occurred when police conducted a raid on a property suspected of functioning as a drug lab, where they discovered various drug-related items such as digital weighing scales, plastic film sealers, and zip-lock bags believed to contain methamphetamine residues.

The subsequent investigation revealed that both officers were renting an apartment at the premises, which is owned by a known drug dealer and former inmate of the Suva Remand Centre. Interestingly, even though both officers are married, they were found to be living together as partners at the property.

FCS has reiterated its strict zero-tolerance policy concerning misconduct and criminal behavior among its officers. Following the proper disciplinary procedures, both officers were promptly terminated. Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, emphasized the significance of integrity within the service and asserted that any breach of the code of conduct, especially those related to criminal activity, would result in immediate action.

This recent case reflects the proactive measures the FCS continues to take to uphold discipline and search for drug-related issues within its ranks. In recent months, the organization has taken decisive steps to maintain its ethical standards, including previous dismissals of officers for drug-related offenses.

The FCS is committed to fostering a safe and ethical environment, working closely with law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related crimes. Their initiative underlines a significant move toward rebuilding public trust and ensuring that FCS personnel remain role models within the community. This continuous effort to enhance the integrity of the Fiji Corrections Service represents a hopeful outlook for maintaining a professional and accountable corrections system.
