Fiji’s Corrections Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has been placed on leave following reports of serious incidents and possible breaches within the Fiji Corrections Service. Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, shared that these allegations have raised significant concerns regarding governance, security, conduct, management, and administration in the organization, necessitating an immediate investigation.

Turaga indicated that, with the agreement of the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, he is invoking Section 22(1) of the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006 to address these issues. During the investigation, Dr. Nakarawa will remain on leave with full entitlements.

In the interim, Auta Moceisuva, the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, will assume the role of Acting Commissioner. The Ministry of Justice has expressed its commitment to reinstating faith in the system, emphasizing the importance of good governance, justice, and transparency within the Corrections Services. Turaga assured that the investigation will proceed diligently, transparently, and in alignment with the rule of law.

This situation presents an opportunity for the Fijian government to reaffirm its commitment to accountability and justice, fostering a culture of transparency that is vital for the credibility of its institutions. By undertaking a thorough investigation, Fiji can work towards restoring public trust and enhancing the effectiveness of its Corrections Service.
