A tribunal is set to be established to investigate accusations of misconduct against Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the suspended Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service. This decision follows a resolution made by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) during its recent meeting.

The COC has also approved the appointment of assisting counsel to aid in the tribunal’s proceedings, with the identities of the tribunal’s chairperson and members expected to be disclosed soon. Although the specifics of the allegations have not been made public, the COC emphasized the importance of due process, ensuring Dr. Nakarawa receives a fair hearing.

This development aligns with the previous move to suspend Dr. Nakarawa due to serious allegations warranting inquiry, as acknowledged by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The suspension was seen as vital for maintaining the operational efficiency of the Fiji Corrections Service during the ongoing investigations.

Facing scrutiny regarding leadership within the corrections department, these measures underscore the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga previously indicated that the serious nature of the allegations necessitated an immediate and thorough investigation, which is now moving forward.

The situation, while challenging, presents an opportunity for meaningful reforms within the Fiji Corrections Service. By fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, public trust in the corrections system and government institutions can potentially be restored, paving the way for enhanced governance and operational standards.

The proactive steps taken by the government reflect a sincere effort to address systemic issues, and as the investigation unfolds, there is hope for improved practices that will benefit both the institution and the community at large.
