Fiji’s Corrections Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has been placed on leave following serious allegations of misconduct within the Fiji Corrections Service. Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga announced that the Ministry had received reports indicating potential breaches of governance, security, conduct, management, and overall administration. These concerns necessitated an immediate investigation.
In conjunction with the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Turaga invoked Section 22(1) of the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006 to address these issues. While on leave, Dr. Nakarawa will continue to receive full entitlements. During his absence, Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva will step in as Acting Commissioner.
The Ministry of Justice is dedicated to ensuring good governance, transparency, and restoring the public’s trust in the Corrections Services. Turaga emphasized that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly, transparently, and in strict adherence to the rule of law.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability within government services. As the investigation unfolds, it is hopeful that the outcome will lead to improved standards and practices within the corrections system, ultimately benefiting the community and promoting trust in public institutions.
