Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Fiji Corrections, has been placed on leave amid serious concerns regarding governance and conduct within the Fiji Corrections Service. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga announced that reports have surfaced indicating potential breaches under Nakarawa’s leadership, prompting the need for an immediate investigation.
Following the consultations with the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Turaga invoked Section 22(1) of the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006 to initiate this process. During the investigation, which aims to be thorough and impartial, Nakarawa will retain his full entitlements while on leave. In the meantime, Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva will step in as Acting Commissioner.
The Ministry of Justice emphasizes its commitment to reinstating integrity, accountability, and transparency within the Corrections Service. Turaga assured that the investigation will adhere to the rule of law, highlighting the importance of addressing these concerns earnestly.
This development underscores a serious commitment from the Fijian government to uphold the principles of good governance and the rule of law, which is crucial for fostering public trust in the justice system. The proactive measures being taken signal hope for improvements in how corrections services are managed, ultimately leading to a more secure and transparent system.
