Fiji’s delegation set to attend COP29 is equipped to effectively engage in negotiations, bolstered by the extensive expertise and experience of its members. Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad announced that the delegation would depart for Azerbaijan on November 11.
Professor Prasad emphasized that many delegation members have participated in various negotiations previously, not only in political roles but also in academic capacities. He highlighted his own background in trade negotiations and the World Trade Organization (WTO), asserting that the delegation is rich in skills vital for success at COP29, which is expected to focus heavily on financing.
The Minister pointed out that the permanent secretary for Finance will also join the delegation, noting his significant experience in negotiating substantial financial agreements on behalf of Fiji in recent years. Addressing critics who question his experience with COP negotiations, Professor Prasad assured them that both he and his team are thoroughly prepared and well-informed ahead of their departure.
He indicated plans for a press conference on November 4, where he would provide more information about the delegation, which comprises 55 to 56 members. It is important to clarify that not all members are government representatives; private sector delegates will cover their own travel expenses, with the government facilitating official accreditation for participation in COP29.
The Minister mentioned that some Fijians may also seek accreditation from other nations to join the delegation. He acknowledged that while critics may seek to misrepresent details, the preparation and capability of the delegation must not be underestimated.
This proactive approach by Fiji’s delegation reflects a commitment to engaging seriously in global discussions on climate action, signaling a strong commitment to addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change.
Overall, Fiji’s readiness for COP29 illustrates how dedicated and prepared developing nations can be in global negotiations, as they work towards securing vital funding and partnerships to combat climate change. This delegation may pave the way for new opportunities and collaborative efforts aimed at sustainable development.
