Around 715 established cooperatives in Fiji have reported a collective revenue of $26 million and profits amounting to $2.5 million. This impressive figure was announced during the launch ceremony for the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, held at Vunimono Hall in Nausori.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that Fijian cooperatives play a crucial role in socio-economic empowerment and have significantly improved the lives of many citizens. “These cooperatives are instrumental in empowering Fijians to alleviate poverty, achieve financial independence, and enhance the welfare of their families and communities,” Rabuka stated. A notable example cited was the Narocake Co-operative Limited, which is composed of individuals from three villages in Lovu and demonstrates the transformative power of such initiatives.
In addition to celebrating these achievements, the launch also introduced the National Cooperatives Database. This new platform is designed to streamline funding applications for cooperative groups across Fiji, making it easier for them to access necessary financial support. Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Cooperatives, highlighted that this database will facilitate monitoring and evaluation within the sector.
Moreover, the Suva Inspiring Women Market Cooperatives expressed their gratitude for the government’s support, which has contributed to the success of cooperatives in addressing social disparities encountered by market vendors in the capital city.
The event heralds a year of celebration and reflection on the pivotal role of cooperatives in fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society in Fiji. Members from various regions, including Navua, Vunidawa, and Korovou, were present to participate in this notable occasion.
With the ongoing development and strengthening of the cooperative sector, there is a hopeful outlook for the future, suggesting that these initiatives will continue to cultivate community growth and economic prosperity throughout the country.
