Fiji’s Cooperatives: Powering Community Resilience and Economic Growth

Hundreds of representatives from co-operatives across Fiji converged at Vunimono Hall in Nausori to commemorate the International Year of Cooperatives with the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World.” The event highlighted the growth and impact of co-operatives in the nation, underscored by remarks from the Permanent Secretary for Cooperatives, Shaheen Ali, who noted that there are now 716 registered cooperatives in various sectors, with an average of two new cooperatives formed each year. This growth in the cooperative sector indicates a rising demand for this business model, particularly among rural and maritime communities.

Ali introduced a new digital platform designed to provide public access to cooperative information, stating it would significantly enhance transparency and efficiency in governance and support for the cooperative movement. “This platform isn’t just a tool; it’s a game changer,” he remarked, emphasizing how it enables individuals to access vital cooperative information with just a few clicks.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who officiated the event, encouraged co-operatives to engage their communities, advocate for supportive policies, and share impactful stories of transformation through cooperative efforts. He expressed optimism that the upcoming International Year of Cooperatives in 2025 would serve as a platform for Fiji’s diverse communities to demonstrate collaborative achievement.

Prior discussions have revealed that Fiji’s cooperative sector is a vital economic force, boasting over 700 registered cooperatives that manage assets valued at $151 million and generating approximately $26 million in revenue annually. This structure not only contributes to economic empowerment but also provides social inclusion, particularly benefiting women and youth. The cooperative movement aligns with Fiji’s traditional values of community and collaboration, positioning it well for future sustainable growth.

The event represents a hopeful commitment to bolstering the cooperative sector, fostering collective efforts for community resilience, and enhancing the overall socio-economic framework in Fiji. The ongoing development and support for cooperatives suggest a promising future filled with opportunities for collaboration and shared success.
