Mosese Bulitavu, a crossbencher Member of Parliament from G9, has commented on the recent release of George Speight, the civilian leader of the 2000 coup. Mr. Bulitavu is the first MP from G9 to respond to Speight’s release.
Speight was granted Presidential immunity following a review by the Mercy Commission on Wednesday. Bulitavu stated, “He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move away from our past and, through reconciliation, seek restoration.”
He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is guiding the reconciliation process and described Speight’s release as a significant step in the right direction.
Bulitavu emphasized that few politicians, including himself who have spent time in prison, fully comprehend why a rehabilitated prisoner should be given a second chance. He called for society to also change its perception of former prisoners, advocating for their reintegration after completing rehabilitation programs with the Fiji Corrections Service.
