Mosese Bulitavu, a Crossbencher Member of Parliament (G9), has expressed his support for the recent release of George Speight, the leader of the civilian coup who has been imprisoned since 2000. Bulitavu is the first MP from the G9 group to comment on Speight’s release, which was facilitated by a presidential immunity granted on Thursday after a review by the Mercy Commission.
Bulitavu stated, “He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move away from our past and seek restoration through reconciliation.” He highlighted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is playing a crucial role in the reconciliation process and that Speight’s release marks a significant step forward.
He emphasized the understanding of rehabilitation, saying, “Only a few of us politicians who have also served time behind bars will appreciate why a fully rehabilitated prisoner deserves a second chance.” Bulitavu stressed the importance of changing societal views on those who have committed crimes, advocating for their acceptance back into the community after completing rehabilitation programs.
