Fiji’s Controversial Pardons: What It Means for Justice?

George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup in Fiji, along with six other individuals, has been officially released from custody. This decision follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services regarding the Mercy Commission’s review of mercy petitions submitted by these individuals on September 18, 2024.

The individuals granted pardons include Sekina Vosavakatini, Nioni Tagici, James Sanjesh Goundar, Adi Livini Radininausori, John Miller, George Speight, and Shane Stevens. Following the Commission’s evaluation, recommendations for mercy were forwarded to the President of Fiji, who granted pardons under Section 119(5) of the Constitution.

These pardons were formalized on September 18, 2024, leading to the official discharge of the individuals from custody on September 19, 2024. However, it should be noted that James Sanjesh Goundar passed away on September 6 while in custody, meaning the pardon was granted too late for him.

The Fiji Correction Service and the government reaffirm their commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and the rule of law, emphasizing the significant role of the Mercy Commission in evaluating clemency petitions with careful consideration of each case.
