Fiji’s Consumer Guardian Steps Down: What’s Next for FCCC?

Joel Abraham has stepped down from his position as the chief executive officer of the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC). Joining FCCC in 2013 and serving as CEO since 2016, Mr. Abraham has been recognized as a transformative leader committed to establishing a regulatory environment focused on fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity in Fiji and across the Asia-Pacific region.

In a recent media statement, the commission emphasized Mr. Abraham’s strong commitment to safeguarding consumers against unfair practices through effective enforcement of competition and consumer protection regulations. Under his leadership, FCCC has significantly enhanced its capabilities and earned recognition both nationally and internationally as a trusted authority on competition matters.

One of his notable accomplishments was the establishment of the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), which has strengthened regional cooperation and elevated regulatory standards throughout the Pacific.

Mr. Abraham also championed numerous employee-focused initiatives, such as the iCARE program, sustainability packages, and flexible work arrangements, reflecting his commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture. Additionally, he guided crucial advancements in the FCCC’s infrastructure and resource management, laying the groundwork for a modern and responsive regulatory agency.

His tenure has been marked by multiple accolades for the FCCC, including recognition at the Fiji Business Excellence Awards and the National Green Sustainability Award, solidifying the commission’s position as a leading regulatory body in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, praised Mr. Abraham’s contributions. He noted that consumers are in a better position today due to Abraham’s leadership, which has inspired a collaborative spirit throughout the Pacific and raised overall regulatory standards.

Isikeli Tikoduadua, the Commission Chair, described Mr. Abraham’s dedication as transformative for the FCCC, asserting that his legacy will continue to benefit Fijian consumers for years to come. Looking ahead, Mr. Abraham has indicated plans to pursue a regional role.
