Fiji’s Constitutional Review: A Step Towards Unity and Truth

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, Manoa Kamikamica, announced that a comprehensive review of the 2013 Constitution will begin soon. He made this statement during the National Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) Jalsa at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Kamikamica emphasized the importance of democracy as a protector of citizens’ rights and freedoms. He stated, “Very soon we will initiate the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a comprehensive review of the 2013 Constitution.” The goal of these initiatives is to reflect on historical events, learn from them, and promote unity among the people of Fiji.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the review of the Constitution is essential for establishing a framework that genuinely represents the citizens of Fiji. He reiterated that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a commitment made by the Coalition Government during the election.

He added, “From the very beginning, the Coalition Government has advocated for the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions to re-examine the dark days of 1987, 2000, and 2006, ensuring that such events are never repeated.” According to Kamikamica, the commission will serve as a source of hope, where the truth will be revealed and reconciliation pursued, ultimately aiming for a more reputable, peaceful, and prosperous future for all.
