Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, Manoa Kamikamica, announced that a comprehensive review of the 2013 Constitution will soon begin. Speaking at the National Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) Jalsa held at Churchill Park in Lautoka, he emphasized the importance of democracy as a safeguard for rights and freedoms.
Mr. Kamikamica stated, “Very soon we will initiate the Truth and Reconciliation Commission alongside a comprehensive review of the 2013 Constitution.” He explained that these initiatives aim to reflect on the past, learn valuable lessons, and promote unity moving forward.
He described the constitutional review as a crucial step toward establishing a framework that genuinely represents the citizens of Fiji. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a commitment made by the Coalition Government during the elections.
“Since its inception, the Coalition Government has advocated for the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to reexamine the difficult periods of 1987, 2000, and 2006, ensuring such events do not occur again,” he added. Mr. Kamikamica expressed hope that the commission would serve as a source of truth and reconciliation, ultimately fostering a future that is reputable, peaceful, and prosperous for all.
