Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently addressed questions regarding the progress of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 following its successful first reading in Parliament, which secured 41 votes in favor. The Prime Minister confirmed that the government will adhere to the necessary legislative processes for the bill’s consideration, which include further debate and the critical requirement of a “super” majority for constitutional changes, as stipulated in the Constitution’s Sections 159 and 160. This may involve not just parliamentary support but also engaging the public for their backing, particularly if a referendum is required to achieve the super majority necessary for approval.

In response to inquiries about bipartisan support, particularly from members of the Opposition, the Prime Minister noted that the recent vote was more about procedural formalities, requiring only a simple majority. He highlighted the importance of cross-party collaboration as the government works towards meaningful constitutional amendments and initiatives such as the National Truth and Reconciliation process.

Additionally, he addressed concerns raised by citizens about enhancing accountability for coup perpetrators, aligning with proposals that call for constitutional changes to explicitly classify coups as acts of treason and establish mechanisms for public support in legislative amendments.

The Prime Minister reassured that despite the removal of a compulsory referendum for constitutional amendments, the government remains committed to ensuring complete transparency and rigorous scrutiny of future legislative changes. He emphasized that any decision to amend the Constitution would follow due process, and any required adjustments would be made in compliance with existing laws.

Several public figures have expressed concerns about various governance issues, including those surrounding illegal transport services and the ongoing challenges in key public sectors like healthcare and education. Rabuka’s administration has indicated it remains attentive to such issues, with plans in place to strengthen services and law enforcement responses.

Moreover, criticism from citizens regarding the reliance on expatriates in government roles has prompted the Prime Minister to clarify that all public service positions are advertised internationally, highlighting a meritocratic selection process.

This ongoing dialogue between the government and the public underscores a broader commitment to fostering an environment of trust and shared governance, paving the way for deeper engagement in Fiji’s political landscape and its critical reforms.

The Prime Minister recognizes the pressing need to uphold public confidence and integrity in leadership. By emphasizing collaboration and transparency, there is a hopeful path towards a more resilient and unified Fiji as it navigates through complexities in its governance and socio-economic landscape.
