Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto recently expressed his belief that nothing is impossible if one is determined to effect change for the benefit of the nation. Contributing to the debate on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025, Naupoto highlighted the need for specific changes within the Constitution, particularly focusing on areas where he feels there is an excessive concentration of executive authority. He emphasized that any amendments must be approached thoughtfully and with care.

This sentiment aligns with ongoing discussions among various political leaders in Fiji who advocate for constitutional reform to better reflect the will of the people. For instance, Attorney-General Graham Leung has pointed out the complexities involved in amending the Constitution, indicating that any proposed changes must be considered through a collaborative and bipartisan lens to ensure they are in the country’s best interest.

Other political figures, such as constitutional expert Professor Anthony Regan, have also expressed concerns regarding the inflexible nature of the current Constitution, arguing that it needs to evolve with society. He noted that a lack of systemic checks and balances could lead to potential risks for future governance if the document remains unchanged.

Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka echoed this view, noting that the Constitution was initially created by a select group and does not capture the diverse voices of the Fijian people. He advocated for a more democratic process for constitutional reform.

Furthermore, the push towards constitutional amendments presents a hopeful opportunity for greater civic engagement and inclusivity. As the government and parliamentarians navigate these discussions, there is a shared desire for a governance structure that resonates with the aspirations of all Fijians. This ongoing dialogue reflects a commitment to fostering a more balanced and representative legal framework that can adapt to the changing needs of the society.

Reforming the Constitution amidst these conversations can pave the way for enhanced democratic values and a more accountable government—positive steps toward a brighter future for Fiji.
