Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu addressed the Fijian Parliament regarding the importance of carefully considering the nation’s unique historical context in the ongoing discussions surrounding the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. He stressed that Fiji’s previous constitutions—including those from 1970, 1990, and 1997—have not endured, often due to the political turmoil that has characterized the nation’s history, highlighted by multiple coups.
During his remarks, Seruiratu noted, “Let’s not forget our history,” indicating that the context in which Fiji operates is distinct from other democracies. He emphasized that most of the prior constitutions failed to fulfill their intended purposes, calling for a more inclusive approach to constitutional reforms. “The government may have the numbers, but that does not mean riding roughshod on the processes that we need to go through,” he stated, advocating for a dialogue that reflects the collective will of all Fijians.
Echoing previous sentiments, Seruiratu underscored the need for a national conversation addressing the implications of past political upheavals, particularly those from 1987, 2000, and 2006. He believes such conversations are vital for understanding historical grievances that affect contemporary governance and for fostering reconciliation.
