Fiji’s Constitution: A Call for Change to Reflect the People’s Aspirations

Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate emphasized the need for the country’s constitution to adapt to the aspirations and interests of the people. In an interview on The Lens@177, he shared his views, highlighting that no constitution can remain unchanged indefinitely.

Mr. Usamate refrained from making new statements regarding a potential constitutional review, noting that the Group of 16 intends to discuss future steps and will issue a unified group statement. He acknowledged that their leader, Inia Seruiratu, had already provided a detailed statement on the matter.

When asked about comments made by MP Viliame Naupoto, Mr. Usamate indicated that Mr. Naupoto is entitled to express his opinions. He reiterated that the constitution should always serve the nation’s best interests.

“Ultimately, no constitution is always going to be static forever,” he stated, adding that changes in circumstances and context necessitate adjustments to better serve the populace.

He also reflected on a public lecture given by constitutional law expert Professor Anthony Regan from the Australian National University, indicating that he values various perspectives on constitutional matters.

When questioned about the availability of constitutional experts in Fiji to engage in the review process, Mr. Usamate said he does not hold a strong opinion but emphasized the importance of creating the best possible constitution. He expressed a willingness to consider the group’s collective views on the subject.
