Only 5 percent of Fiji’s population remains unconnected, revealing that the majority have access to communication technologies. This statistic was shared by Jenny Seeto, chairwoman of Investment Fiji, during a panel discussion on the Fiji National Development Plan (NDP) for 2025 to 2029, referencing a study by Vodafone.

Ms. Seeto emphasized the need to incorporate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Fiji’s NDP. “When considering the supporting infrastructure necessary for diversification, ICT plays a crucial role,” she explained. She acknowledged the positive impact of companies like Google and Starlink in providing connectivity, particularly in rural areas, and the importance of involving these communities in investment decisions.

Addressing income disparity and resource access is vital for promoting inclusive growth, Ms. Seeto noted. She highlighted the importance of improving education and creating well-funded research facilities to develop local solutions for Fiji’s specific challenges. “Focusing on research and innovation aligns with sections of the NDP dedicated to advancing development in these areas,” she added.

Ms. Seeto also pointed out the necessity of basic infrastructure—such as electricity, water, roads, and sanitation—as essential building blocks for community development. “We have investors interested in developing low-cost housing, but bureaucratic hurdles have made it challenging to launch these projects. This is something we can all work on together,” she said.
