Fiji’s COMPOL Search: Who Will Lead the Force?

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to convene on Monday to deliberate on the appointment of a new Police Commissioner in Fiji. Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, expressed anticipation for the upcoming discussions, emphasizing the importance of addressing several pending matters, including the selection of the new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) and the chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

An independent panel was tasked with reviewing 29 applications for the role, as indicated by the COC Secretariat. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the COC, reassured that the selection will adhere to proper procedures. He mentioned that the meeting is crucial for processing various applications.

Noteworthy candidates for the vacant position include former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, acting COMPOL Juki Fong Chew, and UN Assistant Secretary General Unaisi Vuniwaqa. This diverse pool of applicants reflects the potential for a new leadership style within Fiji’s police force.

The upcoming meeting is a significant step toward ensuring that Fiji’s policing is headed by experienced and capable leadership. With an emphasis on due process, the COC’s deliberations could pave the way for a positive transformation in the police force, ultimately enhancing public safety and trust in law enforcement.
