The ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner has entered its second week, with legal counsel Tanya Waqanika expressing the challenges of the lengthy proceedings. In a recent discussion, Waqanika suggested that the inquiry might require further extension to adequately address the complexities involved, reflecting its detailed nature.

Waqanika, who represents Malimali, refrained from labeling the inquiry as a witch hunt aimed at undermining her client. Instead, she emphasized that Malimali remains in good spirits, highlighting their camaraderie through shared community engagements, including attending church services together.

Chaired by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, the inquiry’s essential objective is to assess whether Malimali’s appointment in September 2024 conformed to legal standards and was free from any improper influences. This includes investigating any vested interests connected to high-profile FICAC cases that could have affected her appointment, involving significant public figures like Members of Parliament and senior government officials.

With key testimonies anticipated from influential individuals, including the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions and former ministers, the inquiry is set to culminate in a report for Fiji’s President and Prime Minister later this month. This investigation symbolizes a critical effort to bolster transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governance framework.

In summary, while the inquiry faces operational challenges, it serves a pivotal role in reinforcing the integrity of public service appointments in Fiji. The ongoing analysis not only aims to establish clarity around Malimali’s appointment but also aspires to inspire systemic reforms that foster greater accountability and public confidence in government institutions. As the inquiry continues, it holds the potential to enhance ethical standards in Fiji’s governance, marking a hopeful path toward restoring trust in public office.
