The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Fiji is currently grappling with serious operational challenges that have raised concerns among patients and their families. A frequent user of the hospital expressed discontent about various issues, including non-functional lifts, inadequate food provisions for patients, poor ventilation, inconsistent water supply, and a shortage of beds. He emphasized that these difficulties are particularly detrimental for vulnerable populations, such as pregnant mothers, who sometimes lack access to warm water during childbirth.
Reported experiences of patients reflect a growing dissatisfaction with the hospital’s conditions. Earlier this year, local influencer Andrew Bolakoro, popularly known as “Drixstar,” shared his encounter, where a surgeon apologized to patients for not being able to proceed with their surgeries due to a malfunctioning lift. This incident illustrates the broader infrastructural problems that CWMH is facing, as patients are often left waiting for essential services.
Similarly, Iva Marie Waqa recounted her distressing experience during a family tragedy and highlighted the struggles faced by her and other families while relying on outdated facilities. The lift breakdown during crucial holiday periods demonstrated the urgent need for repairs, resulting in significant delays for food distribution and patient transfers.
A recent report by Johnstaff International Development detailed many of the hospital’s ongoing issues, including structural concerns and failures in steam piping. The report indicated that various wards, particularly the Children’s Hospital and Maternity Ward, are in severe disrepair, posing risks to patient safety and care delivery. Furthermore, the report outlined a dire need for improved electrical systems and emergency services, as many units currently lack adequate fire detection measures.
Despite these considerable challenges, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The Australian Government has announced a substantial investment of $14.7 million to fund the redevelopment of CWMH. This commitment signals potential strategic improvements that could enhance healthcare delivery for all Fijians.
The urgent need for enhancements at CWMH echoes concerns raised previously regarding Fiji’s broader healthcare infrastructure, including a national shortage of approximately 2,000 hospital beds. Ongoing discussions among healthcare advocates and governmental stakeholders hint at a collective determination to address these systemic issues, driven by partnerships that prioritize the health and well-being of the community.
The establishment of a master plan for redeveloping CWMH represents an essential step towards revitalizing healthcare services in Fiji.
