Officials from Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries recently held discussions with representatives from the Ministry of I-Taukei Affairs to prepare for the upcoming National Sea Cucumber Census. The collaborative meeting focused on developing an implementation framework to ensure the sustainable management of vital fisheries resources like sea cucumbers.

The dialogue involved senior staff from various divisions of the Fisheries Ministry, including Research, Inshore Fisheries Management, and Extension. Together, they strategized on a coordinated approach to executing the census, highlighting the significance of joint efforts in maximizing benefits for resource custodians, particularly within I-Taukei communities.

Both ministries agreed that their collaboration would enhance critical areas such as information sharing and capacity building. Educational outreach efforts will be crucial to raising awareness about sustainable fisheries management practices, fostering a culture of sustainability among local communities.

This initiative aligns with the broader commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement that has been emphasized in recent months. Similar to previous initiatives, including those discussed at forums with NGOs and academic institutions, this census reflects a collective aim for effective resource management tailored to local community needs.

The optimistic atmosphere surrounding this undertaking suggests a future where careful management of marine resources not only preserves ecological balances but also strengthens community livelihoods dependent on these resources. By working together, the Ministries are setting the stage for sustainable fisheries management that promises long-term benefits for both the environment and coastal communities in Fiji.
