The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is anticipated to conclude its hearings by the end of this week. Senior Barrister Janet Mason indicated that only a few remaining witnesses are being recalled to provide further testimony. The regional witness hearings are expected to wrap up by Thursday, with the final overseas witness set to testify shortly thereafter.

Mason expressed confidence in the effectiveness and integrity of the COI’s work, mentioning that some individuals might be resisting the examination process, which underscores the importance of the inquiry’s role. The evidence gathered thus far will play a crucial part in determining whether Malimali’s appointment adhered to established legal and ethical standards.

In a related context, Legal Manager Laite Bokini-Ratu has already been called back as a witness, while the dismissed FICAC Manager of Investigations, Kuliniasi Saumi, is scheduled to return to the stand for questioning. The inquiry’s focus remains on evaluating the procedural legitimacy of Malimali’s appointment made in September 2024, particularly looking into any potential improper influences that could have affected the selection process.

This inquiry not only aims at clarifying the circumstances surrounding the appointment but also serves as a critical platform for enhancing accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance. The emphasis on ethical practices and scrutiny might lead to meaningful reforms that bolster public confidence in governmental institutions, fostering hope for a more transparent and accountable future in Fiji.

As the COI approaches its conclusion, it highlights the robust mechanisms in place for addressing potential misconduct in public appointments, reflecting a broader commitment to integrity within Fiji’s governance framework.
