Fiji has made a significant entry into the specialty coffee sector with the launch of ONA Coffee Fiji, a collaboration that promises to transform rural agriculture and drive economic growth. At an energetic launch ceremony at the Duadua Beach Resort in Rakiraki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, celebrated this initiative as a historic step for Fiji’s agricultural export goals.

Kamikamica expressed that this project goes beyond mere commerce: “It’s an investment in our people, our land, and our place on the global stage.” The initiative sees the internationally recognized ONA Coffee, led by World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic, team up with local operator Maheer Prasad to enhance Fiji’s coffee industry by supporting 30 farmers in Ra Province. Their ambitious plan includes distributing one million seedlings over 500 acres dedicated to Arabica and Liberica coffee cultivation.

The establishment of processing hubs in Rakiraki and various regions aims to create local employment opportunities while ensuring that more economic value remains within Fiji. This strategy aligns with the government’s broader mission to diversify exports, building on prior successes in other crops like yaqona, ginger, and turmeric. Additionally, the initiative is supported by improved investment policies and digital connectivity enhancements.

Kamikamica highlighted the importance of empowering rural communities through this venture, stating, “This is about dignity and opportunity.” The launch signifies not only Fiji’s burgeoning place in the premium coffee market but also fosters hope for sustainable rural development and economic revitalization.

This development follows earlier discussions about Fiji’s potential in agriculture, including the need for revitalizing the coffee sector to meet growing global demand. With plans for infrastructure improvements and educational engagements for farmers, the future for Fiji’s coffee industry looks promising, offering pathways for prosperity and community empowerment. ONA Coffee’s commitment to sustainability and local partnerships indicates a bright outlook for both the economy and the environment in Fiji.
