EPC Solar, an Australian-based company, has established a partnership with ONA Fiji to launch a coffee factory in Volivoli, Rakiraki, utilizing renewable energy sources. ONA Fiji, which operates out of Canberra, is looking to expand its operations into Fiji, aiming to tap into the local coffee market.
The commercial manager of EPC Solar, Lucas Sena, noted the initiative aligns with the company’s plans to open a branch in Rakiraki by June. The collaboration will heavily rely on solar technology and battery systems to meet energy requirements efficiently. Sena remarked on Rakiraki’s growth potential, citing new resorts in the area as a strategic opportunity for business expansion.
EPC Solar’s managing director, Daryn Stocks, emphasized the investment, estimated at around AU$250,000 (approximately FJ$366,000), will foster professional development by merging local and Australian talent to enhance renewable energy skills in Fiji. Stocks highlighted the company’s goal to reduce dependency on diesel generators, currently used across many islands, thereby lowering energy costs and minimizing carbon emissions.
ONA Coffee’s director, Maheer Prasad, mentioned that discussions for this venture first began in 2023. The chosen location is strategically close to the wharf, which facilitates efficient processing and distribution of coffee. He expressed excitement over introducing Fiji’s first specialty coffee, with high export revenue forecasts of up to AU$100 million by 2030.
The partnership also emphasizes a commitment to EPC Solar’s strict renewable energy standards, crucial for project initiation. This collaboration aims to replace imported coffee with Fiji-made products, thus enhancing local agriculture and reducing reliance on foreign imports.
